CHEUNG is one of the few orchestral conductors in Hong Kong who specializes in both western and Chinese string instruments. He began his violin lessons at age of 6 and graduated from the Department of Music of the Hong Kong Baptist University, majoring in music performance and pedagogy. Being a violinist, violist as well as an erhuist, he has been performing actively with various local ensembles and orchestras. In 2006, he was appointed principal violist in the Broadway musical “The Phantom of the Opera” during their Asia tour in Hong Kong. CHEUNG has been performing with the violin and erhu in JohnChen Ensemble, with the artistic director, Dr John CHEN Kwok-ping, since 2006. CHEUNG is also a founding member of the first Hong Kong viola quartet VIO.L4.SING. The quartet targets to rebrand the image of the viola, and to show to its audience how much more the instrument is capable of, by presenting and promoting the versatile dynamic range of the viola. CHEUNG has also worked with a number of Hong Kong pop singers such as Andy LAU, Jacky CHEUNG, Aaron KWOK, Leon LAI, Eason CHAN and Kelly CHAN, to name a few.

 

In his secondary school years in Diocesan Boys’ School, CHEUNG had actively participated in the Hong Kong Schools Music Festival and had won the championships of the senior and advanced erhu solo contest for two consecutive years. With the referral by the adjudicator, Erhu Maestro Professor WANG Guotong, of the contest, CHEUNG was admitted to the Junior School of Hong Kong Academy for Performing Arts with a scholarship, for the further professional musical training. CHEUNG has been dedicating himself to music education since 1999. In the meanwhile, he had studied conducting with Professor Feiyun XIA, former Resident Conductor of Hong Kong Chinese Orchestra, and Mr Ka-Lok MAK. He also took part in conducting masterclasses of maestro Huichang YAN and Tsung YEH.

 

He was the conductor of Heep Yunn School Chinese Orchestra, TWGHs Wong Fut Nam College String Orchestra, St. Stephen’s Girls’ Primary School String Orchestra and Heep Woh Primary School String Orchestra, CHEUNG is currently the conductor of Diocesan School Old Boys' Chinese Orchestra, Heep Yunn School Old Girls' Chinese Orchestra, Queen Elizabeth School Symphony Orchestra, St. Francis Xavier's College String Orchestra and Pui Ching Primary and Middle School Chinese Orchestra.
